Sindh Government Bans Daytime Entry of Dumpers to Improve Road Safety in Karachi.
In a significant step to tackle the rising number of traffic accidents, the Sindh government has banned dumpers and heavy vehicles from entering Karachi during the daytime. Under the new rule, these vehicles will only be allowed on city roads between 11 PM and 6 AM. The decision came after a high-level meeting led by Sindh Chief Secretary on the directives of the Chief Minister of Sindh.
Key Decisions to Improve Traffic Safety.
To ensure better traffic management and reduce road accidents, the government has introduced several strict measures.
- Stricter Traffic Enforcement: The Karachi Commissioner, Additional IG Karachi, Secretary Transport, and DIG Traffic have been directed to ensure better implementation of traffic laws.
- Nighttime Garbage Collection: The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has been given three months to shift garbage collection operations to nighttime.
- Heavy Vehicle Safety Checks: A physical verification process will be launched for all heavy vehicles and their drivers to improve safety standards.
- QR Code for Commercial Vehicles: Every commercial vehicle must now have a QR code-certified certificate for easy identification.
- Water Tanker Inspections: The Sindh Water Board has been asked to inspect all water tankers and bowsers within a month to ensure they meet safety regulations.
- Helmet Mandate for Motorcyclists: Authorities have reaffirmed that wearing a helmet is mandatory, and the traffic police will intensify enforcement.
- Public Awareness Campaign: The Sindh Information Department will launch a media campaign to educate citizens about traffic regulations.
- Harsher Penalties for Violators:
- Traffic fines will be increased fourfold to deter violations.
- Reckless drivers will now face FIRs in addition to fines.
- Vehicle Inspection & Certification System (VICS): This system will be implemented across the province to ensure all vehicles on the road are roadworthy.
Traffic Accidents on the Rise.
Karachi’s roads have become increasingly dangerous, with motorcycles making up 65% of the city’s vehicles. Shockingly, 55% of all traffic accidents involve motorcyclists. Over the past 40 days, 112 people have lost their lives, and 216 have been injured in traffic crashes, many involving dumpers.
Public Outcry & Government Response.
The rising death toll has triggered public outrage, with people demanding stricter enforcement of traffic laws. Even Sindh Governor has criticized the traffic police for failing to control reckless driving and heavy vehicle movement. In response, the Sindh government has now taken decisive action.
Stronger Traffic Management Measures.
- DIG Traffic has been given one month to improve Karachi’s traffic conditions.
- The Road Checking Committee has started a crackdown on overloading, over speeding, and unfit commercial vehicles, inspecting 33 vehicles so far.
- With these tougher rules and stricter enforcement, the Sindh government is working to make Karachi’s roads safer for everyone.
